10/3- Red Ribbon Week is this Month and we will be celebrating "My Dreams, My Future, My Choice"

See the infographic below for our themed days!

9/26- In third and first grade this week we explored the study skills topic of focus and paying attention. In third grade, we took a self assessment to see how well we pay attention. Then we learned about how our bodies pay attention and ways to help ourselves focus. We also talked about how to ignore distractions while focusing. At the end of our time, we did an attention test after we reviewed our tips and tricks. In first grade we also talked about focusing and staying on task until our work is done. Our penguin friend came back to visit and we all practiced staying on task and completing our work while Mrs. Cunningham tried to distract our first grade friends. They thought it was hilarious that I was being a distraction and this lesson is always so much fun!

9/19- In fourth and fifth grade this week we explored the topic of procrastination. We took a self-assessment from the University of Idaho to see if we are a procrastinator. After our self-assessment, we learned about how and why our mind procrastinates and we learned some tricks on how to beat procrastination. We learned the "pomodoro techinique" where we set a timer and work for 15 mins and then take a 5 minute break and we continue this until our work is done. Additionally, we learned the "frog trick" where we learned about a quote from Mark Twain which was "If it's your job to eat a frog, it's best to do it first thing in the morning. If it's your job to eat two frogs, it's best to eat the biggest one first." This simply put means getting the hardest, most unpleasant thing done first. So if your 4th or 5th grader comes home talking about frogs or tomatoes, that's why :)

9/12- In kindergarten we explored good kindergarten study skills. A special owl visited all the classes with me and we worked on our listening skills. We learned that to be an excellent listener we need to stop what we are doing, turn and face the speaker and keep our bodies quiet and still. We also realized that it is much easier to listen when everyone is looking at the speaker and is quiet. We also did a listening activity where we could show our excellent listening skills. They did great!  In second grade, we explored how to check over our work. We reviewed all the study skills we have learned in prior years, and discussed how we could catch our mistakes before we turn in our work by checking it. A chipmonk friend came to visit all second grade classes and showed how chipmonks check their work too. We did a great job practicing our checking skills.

9/6-In third grade this week, we explored how different school is from summer and made plans for tackling homework and school work. We learned many of the tips and tricks that fourth and fifth grade students learned the week prior.  In first grade this week, we explored study skills that are important for first graders. We learned that if we are quiet workers it's easier for ourselves and our neighbors to learn. We had a penguin friend who came to class and taught us all about how to be a "quiet penguin" in first grade. They did a great job practicing.

9/2-This week I visited fourth and fifth grade classrooms and we talked about getting back into the groove of school. We shared how different the day looks versus summertime and how expectations are different, and how we even feel different (ie. tired in the morning or after school etc.)

We learned strategies for getting our homework done, such as; making a plan, eating a healthy snack, don't rush, no excuses, ask for help, take a break and do the hardest assignment first. Ask your child about their plan for homework. We reviewed many charts and planners that they could use to track their progress and keep up with their plans.

Middle School Information

Dear BES 5th Grade Parents,

This week during our scheduled guidance time we will be going over middle school information with your students. We will be watching a presentation from Park Crest Middle School detailing course selections and descriptions for middle school classes. I will be reviewing with your student their required core classes and the choices that they have with them, as well as P.E. choices and elective choices. This is an exciting time for our 5th graders as they get to tailor a schedule that can meet their interests. Your child will receive a paper choice sheet from myself on the day of their presentation. This choice sheet is very important as this is the tool that Mrs. Cole (6th grade counselor at PCMS) will be using to build your child’s schedule. I do need all choice sheets returned to me by Thursday February 10th as they are due to the middle school by Feb. 11th. I am sharing with you all of the information that I reviewed with your student so you can help your child make the best decisions for their schedule for 6th grade. Please utilize the links below to explore your students options and attached you will find an extra copy of the 6th grade choice sheet  should you need it, as well as a 6th grade course description guide.

A few details to keep in mind, if you student wishes to participate in AVID they do need to complete an application which is in AVID classroom and is linked here as well https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfyyUnFnm5ND3xOzCUxPWCYp0wQvhxXx_S0NGya5yQNbv-YSQ/viewform. This application is required to be completed if they have selected AVID as an elective.

Additionally, if Band is selected as an elective your student must try out for Band at Park Crest Middle School on Saturday March 5th. More details such as times to come, but mark your calendar if you child has selected Band as an elective.

I know this is an exciting time of year for your student but can also be a time filled with questions, so please don’t hesitate to reach out to myself or your child’s teacher. Additionally if you have Park Crest specific questions here is Mrs. Cole’s contact information Kristina.Cole@pfisd.net,  (512)594-2426.

Please reach out with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Cunningham
